WIAA approves alternate sports plan

WIAA approves alternate sports plan   Friday, Aug 14, 2020

(WQOW, WSAW) - The Wisconsin Interscholastic Athletic Association approved its plan for an alternate fall sports season on Friday.

The plan will allow schools that choose to not participate in the traditional fall sports season due to COVID-19 concerns the opportunity to play next spring.

The WIAA has asked schools to decide which fall sports season it will participate in by September 1.

Practices for some sports in the current fall sports season are scheduled to begin on Monday, August 17.

The Board of Control considered six alternate schedule proposals. The first option was approved by a unanimous vote.

Under the plan, the winter and spring sports seasons will shrink to accommodate the alternate fall season. Postseason tournaments are an option for all sports in all seasons except for the alternate (spring) football season. There is also an opportunity for teams to play additional games once they are eliminated from the postseason.

Here's a breakdown of the new schedule the WIAA shared with WisSports.net's Travis Wilson.

The WIAA will also no longer use risk levels to determine guidance, instead of centering around local-health imposed gathering limitations. The WIAA is also expected to give guidance to schools on how to quarantine positive cases.
